Learn How to Make Beaded Jewelry by Janet Denning
Doing things yourself is always rewarding – especially making your own beaded jewelry! You can give these unique, personal pieces of jewelry as gifts; or even sell them and make a part time business of your hobby!
Beaded jewelry is extremely versatile; you can make nearly any kind of jewelry at all using beads. You can make earrings, bracelets and necklaces all with relative ease. If you take care in making these items, they can look just as good as commercially produced ones! Best of all, once you learn to make your own jewelry, you’ll never be at a loss as where to find the right piece of jewelry to match an outfit – you can simply make it yourself!
However, a lot of people rush into jewelry making and go purchase beads, but neglect to find out what else they will need. Before you go shopping for supplies, make a list of all of the materials and tools you’ll need so that you won’t miss out on picking up important supplies.
The first step is to decide which materials and tools you’ll need. There are plenty of choices for materials to string your beads on, with Tigertail being one popular choice. This is a very durable material, but does have the disadvantage of being easily kinked. Another material which is a little easier to work with is soft-flex wire. You’ll also most likely want some crimping beads to hold your beads in place as you finish your pieces. A crimping tool is also something you’ll probably want. They are a little more expensive than a pair of garden variety pliers, but they will make the end result so much better that they are well worth paying more for.
As far as beads are concerned, there are a lot of choices, so don’t think that you have to stick with ordinary styles of beads. There are shapes, sizes, colors and materials of bead which can make jewelry which is as unique as the person who will wear them.
Before you actually string your beads, it’s a good idea to lay them out and have a closer look at them to make sure that you’re happy with how they look together. A bead board can be helpful here, since this will let you lay out your beads and see how they’ll look strung together. One good general rule is to wait until the next day after laying out your beads before you start stringing – if they look as good to you in the morning as the night before, you’ll know that the piece will be one you can be proud of.
The only limit to the styles of jewelry you can make is your imagination. Of course, the style you choose to create will influence the length and the way that you string your beads; measuring carefully beforehand is key. It’s a good idea to get a measuring guide to help you as you get starting making jewelry. There’s nothing worse than making a piece of jewelry only to find out that it’s not the right length! You’ll usually have to remake the whole piece to fix these kinds of measuring mistakes.
When you make your own beaded jewelry, you have the opportunity to create a thing of beauty – and you’ll get the satisfaction of a job well done. This jewelry will be loved by whoever you give it to; and you’ll like having these pieces for yourself too. However, you might want to get some detailed directions or take some classes before you start to make sure that you can create high quality beaded jewelry.
