When I decorate I like to do as much of it on my own as possible. I think using my own hands to create my decor makes my home feel more like a home, less like a place where I happen to live. So I stain and paint my own furniture and try to create as much of my own artwork as possible. One of my favorite things to do is my accent pieces entirely my own, so I’ve learned how to make my own curtain rings. Here are some of the ways I have done it:
- Use old office supplies. Rubber bands are obviously a little ineffective, but there are lots of other office supplies you can use. A paper clip chain is one solution, but my absolute favorite DIY curtain rings are made from binder clips. Incredibly easy to replace and reuse and they give a great stainless industrial look without much effort.
- Use old bracelets. This will involve a little bit of cutting, so don’t do it with any bracelet you’re not willing to sacrifice. But bracelet curtain rings offer a really great touch of home and care to any room. I’ve used old friendship bracelets (cut into them, loop into the curtain, then close with a pin or sew shut), bangles (cut and bend wide enough for the curtain to fit into), and jelly bracelets (cut and then reseal later with some hot glue).
- Use old necklaces. A lot like bracelets, but with the added benefit of having a bit of length. Beaded necklaces are especially great for curtain rings–just remove half the beads and then refasten them. Simple and elegant!
- Use fabric scraps. If you’re a crafter like me, you probably have a LOT of old fabric scraps lying around, dying to be used for something. Re-purposing them as curtain rings makes a lot of sense, especially if you used some of the fabric to make the curtains! Creates a great matching look that is both subtle and “wowing”.
- Use old ribbon. A lot like above, but with ribbon curtain rings instead of fabric ones. Great for all those ribbons you saved from Christmas presents for year. I find that these work really well in kids rooms–if they break they are super easy to replace without a lot of work.
- Decorate the existing curtain rings. Put that hot glue gun to some good use! I’ve had great success attaching googly eyes, seashells, or even little charms. Especially great for shower curtain rings, which need to be waterproof and so defy the use of fabric, ribbon, etc. Googly eyes really make the kids smile, so use them in their bathroom and make showering fun.
When I decorate I make sure to bring a lot of personality into any room, and I hope you do the same. So feel free to mix and match the above or come up with your own way. The important thing to remember is that with a little bit of work your curtain rings can be totally, fantastically, you.
