Friendship bracelets are very similar in ways to promise rings. They are worn as a symbol of friendship between two friends. Although most people exchange them as a platonic friendship they can also signify a romantic friendship also.
When I was young I remember my first attempts at trying to make friendship bracelets. I found it very difficult and always kept getting the knots wrong. It took a little bit off practice and some help from my mom to find a start to get the general idea of how to actually get the string lengths correct and make sure I did not tie the knots around my fingers.
One of the important things you need when making these bracelets is getting the string length correct. Generally you need four strands of hemp, which should be around 5 feet long. The great thing here is that you can mix the colors to make it unique and possibly combine your friend’s favorite colors also. Some people also like using embroidery threads, which comes in a variety of colors, which will then allow you, incorporate a more individual style into the bracelet.
As I’m sure you are aware there are many different patterns available that you can make. There are plenty of websites out there that can and will advise and show you how to generate the various patterns is for your jewelry. When I was younger it was much more difficult to find information on how to make these. The generation today has easy access and information at their fingertips by simply surfing the Internet.
Remember if you are just starting off make sure that you do not tackle any advanced patterns. You will become disheartened and maybe not want to continue doing this great hobby. It’s imperative that you learn the basic steps and understand the concept before you tackle any advanced patterns. It’s amazing now what I have learned over the years and am now passing on to my children. The funny thing is I can still remember how to do the knots so this is something that will stick with you for a lifetime.
