Using Beads For Jewellery Making To Make The Perfect Summer Headpiece by Jamie Simpson

Beads for jewellery making are more available and affordable than ever, and retro-1960s ‘Summer of Love’ styles are still alive and well in today’s fashion trends. With colourful patterns and often a quasi-Native American or South Asian look, these cheerful clothes and accessories bring a sense of optimism to daily life.

Beaded headbands or headpieces were extremely popular in the hippie era and many people still associate them with the youthful idealism of flower children. Whether you’re planning to join today’s hippies at the Glastonbury Festival, travel with the Rainbow Family or just want an attractive look for a party or every day, it’s easy to find beads for jewellery making and create your own bright, beautiful summer headpieces at little cost.

You can find an array of beads for jewellery making on the internet at beadsdirect.com. You might want to make a headband of leather suede lace, cotton or hemp cord. For working with leather you can use wood beads or metal or glass pony beads. To make a woven headband you could use seed beads, some silk or nylon beading thread and a bead loom. One of the easiest headpieces to make is the plaited leather headband. Measure about 100cm of soft suede lace. Gourd or peyote stitch is authentically Native American and looks much more complicated than it is. There are other stitches and styles that you can learn in classes or out of books on beading.

Choose seed beads in whatever colours and sizes please you and weave them into a band using either a bead loom or off-loom weaving. Sew each end onto a strip of elastic, making sure the completed headband will fit your head comfortably without being too tight.

Besides headbands, you can make ornaments that fasten onto your hair with a clip or slide. Use suede lace or cotton cord with pony beads.

The most beautiful beads for jewellery making are Swarovski crystals. They are more expensive than other beads but worth the price. Buy the smallest crystals available to use in headpieces. Some people combine crystals and seed beads in designs. Crystals look wonderful with feathers. Use them with silver wire to make tiara headbands for more elegant occasions.
